Novel Synopsis:
Holly McGee travels north to the Alaskan bush to teach science in a village school. Her teen son Shane reluctantly accompanies her. They find that life in rural Alaska is another world and struggle to adjust to the culture and the way of life.
While their village, along with the rest of Alaska, is struggling with what might be the onset of global warming, Shane is afraid he’s losing his sanity. The village angulkuq, or shaman, tries to teach Shane how to control himself. Shane learns how the Yupik see the world as it’s falling apart. Is Shane losing his mind, or could he be the village’s salvation?
