Zach’s Film Classics

Princess BrideAfter the great Princess Bride conversations that have been flying around the Internet, we re-watched it again tonight for the umpteenth time. It was just as awesome this time as the first.

On the “Making Of” documentary, the actors talk about what it’s like having been part of a modern and enduring classic, our generation’s Wizard of Oz. Indeed, this film will stand the test of time better than most because its humor, romance, action and fabulous writing are timeless.

I asked my 15 year old, Zach, whether he’d show it to his kids (if he should ever have kids) and he fairly enthusiastically agreed that he would.

Then he shared with me his list of classics he’ll pass on to the next generation:

The Princess Bride
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
History of the World Part I
Spaceballs
Robin Hood: Men in Tights
Airplane
Star Wars I – VI
Lord of the Rings I, II, III
Men in Black
Titan AE

It’s a pretty good list! No Godfather or Field of Dreams, but, well, he’s 15.

Jeri, I’m not 15, and I agree with most of his list. I’m pretty sure that says more about my maturity level than his.

    ::skulks off::

  2. Nathan Says:

Please show him Dr. Strangelove. Give him a little Cold War background before you watch it.

And I give his list the “seal of approval” too.

    Hmmm….

Maybe I need to come up with my own list.

Except that I don’t claim to know what movies are classics.

Looks like you have a Mel Brooks fan! Have him watch “The Producers” and/or “To Be Or Not To Be” just for fun.

    I love his list.

Just found out my Smart Boy will be seeing “Young Frankenstein – The Musical” on Broadway when he goes to NY in March for his school trip.

I am envious, yes, I am.

I like a lot of his picks too! Although I’m not quite the Mel Brooks fan he is.

I am not sure I know what a classic is either. I do know that critical favorites and academy award frontrunners often do little for me because they are usually totally depressing and often ultraviolent and obscure.

I just ordered him Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles – hopefully he’ll enjoy those just as much.

Janiece, I’m jealous of your smart boy. Why aren’t you tagging along as a chaperone? ;) I wanted to take my smug boy to NY theater for graduation, but we decided on Vegas instead, a little less expensive and a lot easier.
