While the Offense continues to sputter, the Seahawks Defense put together an awesome effort this past weekend, and the Blue Men crushed the San Francisco 49ers 23-3. Pretty hard to be upset with much with a road win like that, within the division.
First, the Defense. About three plays in, Rocky Bernard, all about 330 pounds of him, engulfed 49er QB Alex Smith, sending him to an early shower. That was the first of six sacks on the day, with Julian Petersen, who has to be one of the most “ripped” muscle guys I have ever seen in a pro-football uniform, taking three and letting his ex-fans know about it by pointing to his name on the back of his uniform after each. SF had to go to Trent Dilfer, the ex-Seahawk backup who is normally pretty competent, but just had no answer for the Seahawks D. Darryl Jackson, the ex-Hawk who was traded to SF in the off season, apparently wanted a big game but got only 38 nearly invisible yards. He looked pretty dejected. Marcus Trufant got two interceptions in the best game I’ve seen him play in a while, though I’ll admit that if you don’t hear his name he’s having a decent game as a cornerback, because he’s covering well.
The Offense, well, I’m sticking with my description “sputter-y”. The running game still isn’t working right. Matt still looks pretty good, very efficient, and they managed a two pass touchdown drive that was excellent. Deion Branch is into rhythm, now, too, which is good, we’ve been waiting for that since we picked him up in the trade last year. Marcus Pollard got his first Hawks TD, nice to see. Shaun, come on pal, get it grovin’!
Anyway, it was a nice win that put us in first place in the NFC West through the first ¼ of the season. Next up: Pittsburgh, surprisingly whacked at home by the Cardinals by a TD this past weekend, which did not please me at all…I don’t want the Steelers angry for our little visit.
