We finally finished Zach’s pond and waterfall today! It is his annual project for his 9th grade horticulture class, and he darn well deserves an A. Yes, we helped, and supplied the budget – but he did 90% of the work, especially the basic design and heavy labor. He dug the hole, built the backdrop planter to hold some of the displaced dirt, laid the liner, hauled the rock, selected the plants and the groundcover, and set up the pump and filter weir for the waterfall. He learned a ton!

We started by spray painting
the pond outline on the grass. |

Excavating the pond was
the biggest part of the job! |

The finished hole was about
6′ across and 2′ deep. |

We used carpet padding
for pond underlay. |

We chose EPDM liner for flexibility,
durability and ease of repair. |

The finished pond, without
any landscaping. |

The pond after adding plants and
landscaping rock. |

Closeup of the waterfall, which
was challenging to build. |
PS… the wire bench in the finished pond picture is my mother’s day present.

I’m a raging perfectionist and after posting I noticed several typos. So I deleted and reposted w/o ‘em. I’m an idiot, what can I say.
