Writing Playground

One of my favorite bloggers, John Scalzi of Whatever, has been working on a new project. Oh – and he’s a darn good author to boot, writing speculative fiction like the cloned love child of Robert Heinlein, Joe Haldeman and CJ Cherryh.

This project is the writers’ playground Ficlets. It’s a place where you can share your short short story tidbits with the world – and collaborate with others on theirs. Once you’ve shared your story, others can pick it up by adding a prequel, sequel or tangent. All posts have a maximum character count of 1024 characters.

Scalzi and his co-project folks have a added a lively blog to the site, and also plan to include author interviews and feature ficlets by well-known authors.

I foresee a potential addiction in my future. I have a hard time getting started on fiction projects – but anyone can write 1024 characters (or less), right??? I’ve set myself up with username Saffron (after the amoral, much-married con artist on Firefly) and have played around with it. It’s great fun, both to write an original piece and to follow on to someone else’s!

I could definitely see this hindering my other writing projects, but at least I’m writing, right? I think it’s good practice.
